The December 17, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was our end of year party where we celebrated memories and experiences from 2021 and then shared aspirations for 2022. Poet Dorri Scott delivered a poem about the importance of giving back this holiday season. Julia (age 7) and Josh (age 12) of Alexandria, VA told us about how they are raising money for a family they adopted through Feed it Forward DC. Andrea Jackson shared her thoughts about organizing in rural Virginia. Lynlee Thorne of the Rural GroundGame shared they support rural candidates. Our favorite legal pundit Gene Rossi gave us an update on the recent ruling that struck down Trump’s claims of executive privilege. We ended with inspiring words from Congressman Gerry Connolly.

The December 3, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a conversation on investing in Democracy early, often and ongoing.  Senator Jennifer McClellan spoke about policy issues, the current political landscape post-election, and what we can doing right now to prepare for the legislative session and the next election. Tram Nguyen (Co-Executive Director, New Virginia Majority) told us about their long-term work to build the power of marginalized communities across the state and how we can work together to expand this critical ongoing effort. Khenia Haro-Perez (Executive Director) and Delegate Jay Jones (Founder) of Meet our Moment (MOM) discussed their new organization that recruits and trains minority Democratic candidates to run for state and local office in Virginia.

The December 3, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a conversation on Living , Learning & Creating Change in Real Time.  Galina Varchena (NARAL Virginia) gave us a special Supreme Court update. Josh Stanfield (Political Strategist) discussed the federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of running this year’s House elections under a decade-old, Republican-gerrymandered map and what that means for 2022 elections. Denver Supinger (National Committee Representative), Maureen Coffey (President), and Camila Alfonzo Meza (Latino Caucus) of the Virginia Young Democrats spoke about their plans to shake things up and how we can help. Kay Ferguson (ARTivism Virginia) shared what is going on with the Violation Vigil Project, where 17 groups have come together to bring awareness to the 350+ violations by the Mountain Valley Pipeline through visual and aural representations. Shannon Downey (Badass Cross Stitch) told us about her nationwide craftivism tour during the pandemic and the activists she met making good art and trouble while on the road.

REAL TALK 2021 – The Good, The Bad & Calls For Construction Change

The November 12, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a hard hitting conversation about the Good, The Bad and Calls for Constructive Change following the Nov. 2nd election. Delegate Marcus Simon (HD 53) spoke about redistricting: What caused the Redistricting Commission’s deadlock and what is happening now that the process is in the hands of the Virginia Supreme Court. Atima Omara (Political Strategist, Virginia DNC member and former president of the Young Democrats of America) shared her insights into the mistakes of 2021 and ways we can build a stronger party from the grassroots up. Jennifer Kitchen (former candidate for delegate HD25) spoke about the implications of this year’s election for rural voters and rural candidates. Caitlin Coakley (former candidate for delegate HD65) shared how she outperformed in her district by engaging directly with voters with an authentic message. Caitlin Bennett (Chair, Fredericksburg Democratic Committee) explained how we can get constructively involved in the reorganization of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

The November 5, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was the show immediately after the 2021 Virginia election. Finale Norton (former candidate in HD100) and Delegate Elizabeth Guzman discussed what they saw in the 2021 election and their thoughts moving forward. Dr. Stephen Farnsworth (Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at University of Mary Washington) helped us unpack this election. Dr. Jaime Settle (Associate Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary) spoke about her research on the impact of social media on political behavior and her book Frenemies: How Facebook Polarizes America. Matt Rogers (Politidope)—one of the people responsible for recruiting many of the candidates this cycle—talked about recruitment, retention, and what needs to happen to finally have a candidate on the ballot in all 100 districts. Gene Rossi (former Federal Prosecutor and our Power Pundit) gave us his take on this week’s hot topics.

FINAL COUNTDOWN: Fired Up and Ready to WIN!

The October 29, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was the final show before Election Day 2021. To get the party started, we remembered what it felt like to win BIG in 2017 and to TAKE BACK POWER in 2019. Then Delegate Sam Rasoul brought his truth, love, and grit perspective to these final days of campaigning. Senator Tim Kaine shared touching memories of his father-in-law Linwood Holton, 61st Governor of Virginia and desegregation champion who passed away the previous day at 98. Senator Kaine shared how Holton was an example of doing the right thing, even when it is not popular at the time. Congressman Gerry Connolly also shared memories of Governor Holton and his legacy. There is no better source of inspiration than hearing from the heart and soul of Democracy, our grassroots activists. Freeda Cathcart, Rose Fabia, and Bob Fasick shared why they are fired up and ready to win! Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn got us into high gear as she spoke about what Democrats have delivered this election. The issue of paid family leave is front and center this election. Kristina Hagen from the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy will share stories from our candidates on how this has impacted their lives. We closed the show with Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall getting us fired up and ready to win!

CAN WE TALK? Democracy Needs You

The October 22, 2021 Friday Power Lunch focused on current hot topics.  Qasim Rashid (Human rights attorney, former candidate, and Sirius Radio talk show host) spoke about voting rights, human rights, and the radicalization of the Republican Party. Linda Mann (Executive Director of Northeastern Law’s Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project and a member of the Steering Committee of the African American Redress Network) and Bilqis Wilkerson (Managing Director, Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University School of Law) told us about the work of the African American Redress Network to address racial injustice through the pursuit of reparations and the newly formed Virginia Reparations Coalition. Jennifer Carroll Foy (former Delegate and candidate for Governor) spoke about her Virginia for Everyone PAC and its GOTV efforts to help candidates for Delegate with canvassing (knocking 35,000 doors) to fundraising. Michelle Maldanado (HD50) was our spotlighted candidate. Kate Young (artist) shared with us the story behind her community art project “Fairies of Del Ray.”

The October 15, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a discussion about how Virginia is the bellwhether state this election. David J. Toscano (who served 14 years in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 57th District) discussed his two new books: Fighting Political Gridlock: How States Shape Our Nation and Our Lives and Bellwether: Comments on Virginia’s Political Transformation, 2006-2020. Postcards4VA announced their 2021 total postcards mailed. Reid McCollum (Co-Founder of Postcards to Swing States) shared the findings of their 2020 postcard studies (Spoiler alert, postcards work better than we thought!). Des Newman (CEO) and Misha Davis (COO) of Siren Vibes Records (a new record label out of Richmond) spoke about their work bringing artists from Virginia, DC and Maryland to the big stage. Manisha Singh (Political Director of Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia and Member of the Virginia Congressional District 11 Democratic Committee) told us about their upcoming Diwali festival and their GOTV efforts. Our candidate spotlight this week was on Candi King (HD2).

PROTECTING WHAT MATTERS: It’s All About Community

The October 8, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a discussion about people who are standing up and speaking out for their community. Three time New York Times best-selling author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon spoke about her new book The Daughters of Kobani, an extraordinary story of the women who took on the Islamic State and won. Chef Noori (who fled Afghanistan with his family in 2015 and is now the owner of The Mantu, a modern Afghan fine dining restaurant in Richmond) told us about how is making meals for newly arriving Afghan refugees. Guest host Jolicia Ward led a conversation on the fight for the Brown Grove community in Hanover County, VA) with Diane Drake (Brown Grove Historian) and Renada Harris (Brown Grove Member & Activist). Our candidate spotlight featured Linwood Blizzard (HD99).

Domestic & Sexual Violence: The Fight for Justice Continues

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the October 1, 2021 Friday Power Lunch had a segment on domestic & sexual assault and overall the show discussed how the fight for justice continues. Will Rumford (Distributed Program Manager for the Virginia Turnout Project) who spoke about the Reach app and how we can use it to reach out to friends and family to increase voter turnout this election. Lisa Sales (Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Advocate), Susheela Varkey (Domestic & Sexual Violence Attorney, Virginia Poverty Law Center), and Buta Biberaj (Commonwealth’s Attorney for Loudoun County) discussed a situation happening in Loudoun County where a judge failed to treat a victim of domestic violence with dignity and respect and re-victimized her by sentencing her to 10 days in jail. Sookyung Oh (Virginia Director, NAKASEC) told us about the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium’s (NAKASEC) and their early voting organizing efforts this election. David Broder (President, SEIU Virginia 512) gave an update on the vote before the Fairfax and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors on whether or not to pass a meaningful collective bargaining ordinance that will give essential county employees a real seat at the table to negotiate for better jobs and services.

THRIVING OVER ADVERSITY: How to Beat Burnout & Build Resilience

The September 24, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a discussion on burnout. Paul Gorski (Founder, Equity Literacy Institute) who spoke talk about his research on activist burnout. Mindfulness coach Corinne Coppola discussed building personal resilience to deal with burnout and lead us in some hands-on activities. Our early voting spotlight was on Prince William County candidates Delegate Elizabeth Guzman (HD 31) and Briana Sewell (HD51). Elizabeth also spoke on early voting efforts in the Hispanic/Latinx community. Kristina Hagen of the VA Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy had a conversation with Briana Sewell (HD51) on family friendly economy issues and how they are on the ballot this election.

Full Frontal Attack on Reproductive Rights & Freedom

The September 17, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was a discussion on how women’s fundamental rights are on the chopping block. Tarina Keene (Executive Director, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia) will help us understand Texas bill SB8, what the Supreme Court’s ruling tells us about the fate of Roe V Wade, and what this means and what we need to do in Virginia. RaeAnn Pickett (Director of Communications) and Han Jones (Political Director) from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia will give a report on what’s going on with women’s access to reproductive health care. Ayé Johnson (Community & Volunteer Engagement Accomplice, Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project) and Tannis Fuller (Executive Director, Blue Ridge Abortion Fund) will tell us about the important work their groups are doing to help women have access to the care they need. Lissa Savaglia (Chair, Loudoun County Democratic Committee, aka- LCDC) will talk about the early voting efforts in Loudoun. Barb Jones (President, Loudoun County NOW) will tell us about the “Rally in Solidarity” in Sterling on Sept. 19th.

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT: Ending Gun Violence from the Bottom Up

September 10 2021

The September 10, 2021 Friday Power Lunch theme was Fighting the Good Fight: Ending Gun Violence from the Bottom Up. Dr. Benjamin Albers, (Sociology Professor, Bridgewater College) discussed the American militia movement and its ties to gun policy. Shannon Watts (Founder, Moms Demand Action) gave an overview of the work of Moms Demand Action and shared how grassroots activists across the nation are working to elect gun sense candidates. Melanie Cornelisse (candidate for Delegate HD78) and Sarah Bagley (candidate for Alexandria City Council)—both Moms Demand Action activists–stepped up to run for office this election and shared how their activism inspired and prepared them for their new role as candidates. Britta Brown Whitehead (Group Leader: Chesapeake, Portsmouth & Suffolk, Moms Demand Action) spoke about her work to get black community groups behind gun violence prevention. Katie Fox (Virginia State Red Flag Lead & Commonwealth Project Co-Lead, Moms Demand Action) explaindc the tightrope volunteers walk in rural Virginia. Katie also spoke about being a gun owner and part of the Everytown Survivor Network as a survivor both of suicide loss and suicidal ideation. Zack Mooney (Eastern States Organizing Director) talked about Supermajority and its work.

SECRET SAUCE OF THE WOMEN’S SUMMIT: People, Issues & Candidates

The August 20, 2021 Friday Power Lunch looked at the ingredients of our secret sauce for success by highlighting the Summer of Summits tour stops in Northern Virginia, Harrisonburg, and Virginia Beach. We celebrated the people who attended, shared what we learned about messaging from the workshops, AND, of course, focused on our candidates. We started the show with a special report on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan with Ellie Smeal (President, Feminist Majority). Then we switched gears introduced one of our favorite new tactics we learned in our workshops, the coordinated Twitter storm. Next we had a fast-paced roundup of issues on the ballot this November. The roundup participants included: – Matt Royer – VA Justice Democrats , Andrea Miller – Center for Common Ground, Lee Williams – Green New Deal VA, Kristina Hagen – Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy Virginia, Connie Cordovilla – NOW VA, Melissa Hartman – RASR (Resolutions Addressing Systemic Racism), Jamie Lockhart – Planned Parenthood Action of VA, and Diana Williams – Clean Virginia.  Our candidate spotlight was on Delegate Dan Helmer (HD40), a veteran of the Afghan war, who shared his thoughts and insights on the current heartbreaking situation in Afghanistan.

The Friday Power Lunch host Katherine White was live in Virginia Beach getting ready for the third and final stop of Network NOVA’s Women’s Summit Rally Tour. Katherine conducted her zoom in the Hilton Hotel’s bridal office for some peace, quiet and background fun. The show’s guests included: Edith Bullard, Director of Communications, ACLU of Virginia, discussed what still needs to happen with voting rights legislation in Virginia and what is going on nationally. The Rural Ground Game team (Lynlee Thorne, Campaigns Director; Ian Mcnally, Executive Director; and Susan Stancill, Committees Director) shared their vision and work rebuilding the Democratic brand in rural Virginia by strengthening the bench of activists, committee members, and future candidates. Lasandra Thompson (HD3) was our candidate spotlight and is working with the Rural Ground Game. Polly Branch (Community Artist) spoke to us about her work combining art and activism.

The August 6, 2021Friday Power Lunch addressed how community organizers are keeping the heart of Democracy beating. Luisa Boyarski (Virginia Grassroots Coalition) gave the grassroots update. Liz White (Executive Director of OneVirginia2021 ) discussed the Redistricting Commission and why it is important for the public to give testimony. Andrea Miller (Founding Board Member, Center for Common Ground) spoke about the Center’s work with under-represented voters to engage them in elections and advocate for their right to vote. Frank Moseley (Social Entrepreneur and Director of the Richmond Democracy Center) discussed the new Richmond Democracy Center, a project of the Center for Common Ground that works with communities to build long term civic engagement. Bernadette “BJ” Lark from the Roanoke Democracy Center located in Gainsboro community presented her community voter outreach work and shared her insights on who is missing when it comes to voting. Reverend Wendy Hamilton (Candidate for DC Delegate to the House of Representative in 2022) told us us about her organization MidtermsMattersDC that works to engage communities around the importance of participating in the midterms.

RURAL WOMEN SPEAK: Living, Working & Organizing in Appalachia

The July 30 Friday Power Lunch featured women from Appalachia who spoke about what it’s like living, working, and organizing in rural, red districts in Virginia. The show’s guests included: Meredith Dean (Founder of Appalachian Women of Action) started us off by talking about the history of women activism in Appalachia. Denise Hale Blakeney (Board Member, Appalachian Women of Action) and Diane Weiss (Chair, Giles County Democrats) spoke about how rural life requires its own type of organizing. Edna Gulley (Appalachian Women Rising and Clinchco organizer) discussed rural black communities in red districts. Bridgette Craighead (Candidate HD9 and Black Lives Matter organizer) and Starla Kiser (Former candidate for Delegate in HD 4) talked about what it is like to run in a deep red district and how every time a candidate runs, important strides are made.

The show’s guests guests included:  Karl Frisch (Providence District, Fairfax County School Board) and Rachna Sizemore Heizer (Member-at-Large, Fairfax School Board) gave an update on how School board meetings have become the focus point of political debate and the target of protests that threaten the safety of members and citizens.  Ana Owens and Galina Varchena from NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and Jesse Torrey (Managing Director of Whole Woman’s Health Alliance) discussed the criminalization of healthcare. Kristina Hagen (Virginia Campaign Director, Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy) spoke on how issues from paid family and medical level to child care are finally getting the state and national attention they deserve. THINGS ARE HEATING UP: Clean Energy Revolution & Environmental Justice

The July 16, 2021 Friday Power Lunch addressed the Clean Energy Revolution & Environment Justice because “Things are Heating Up.”  The lineup of guests included: Luisa Boyarski (Virginia Grassroots Coalition) gave her grassroots update. Karenna Gore (Executive Director of the Center for Earth Ethics) discussed what changes are needed to stop ecological destruction and create a society that values the long-term health of all people and our planet. Ronnie Levin (Water & Health Faculty, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Retired EPA Senior Scientist) discussed how drinking water issues are environmental justice issues. Cassady Craighill (Communications and Advocacy Director, Clean Virginia) spoke about the intersection of climate change and the need for energy rate reform. Karen Campblin (Green New Deal Virginia) gave us an update on what’s happening in Virginia from the pipeline to progress in the legislature. We spotlighted two candidates: – Jasmine Gore (HD62) and Randall Wolf (HD20).

FACE EVERYTHING AND RISE: Independence Day Special

July 2, 2021

The theme of the July 2, 2021 Friday Power Lunch was “Face Everything and Rise.” It was our Independence Day special program. Our Guests Included: Author Kate Moore who discussed her new book “The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear.” This is the story of Elizabeth Packard, housewife and mother, whose husband committed her to the Illinois State Hospital in 1860 because he felt threatened by her intellect and independence. Elizabeth discovered many sane women like herself in the same situation and refused to be silenced. Her courageous act challenged the medical science of the day and was an early example of how women’s rights are human rights. This is not Kate’s first book about badass women rising up and changing the world. Kate is also the author of “The Radium Girls,” the story of young factory workers who lead a groundbreaking battle for workers’ right. Del. Sam Rasoul (HD11 and The Impact Center) shared what he learned listening to the voices of Virginians throughout the state during his Truth, Love, & Grit tour. Aysha Ahmed (Deputy National Organizing Director of Emgage) told us about Emgage’s work to educate, engage and empower Muslim American communities through educational events, voter initiatives, and leadership development for the purpose of creating a community of equitable, knowledgeable, and motivated citizens. Charlotte McConnell (Equality Advocate) discussed the recent disruptions at local School Board meetings in Loudoun and across the state by parent groups opposing transgender rights and teaching about racial equity. WHEN WE VOTE WE WIN – Organizing for the 2021

The Friday Power Lunch on June 25, 2021 was all about the November election. We have our work cut out for us to #KeepVABlue. We need to reach out to voters to make sure they realize all that our Democratic trifecta has done so we have a strong turnout at the polls. When We Vote We Win! Heidi Drauschak (Executive Director, Win Virginia) spoke about WinVirginia’s plans for this cycle in terms of their candidate recruitment program, training program, and performance based funding program for candidates. Luisa Boyarski (Virginia Grassroots Coalition) told us about the work of the Virginia Grassroots Coalition. She was then joined by four coalition group members to discuss their organization’s key issues, concerns, and actions. – Kathleen Murray, WofA – Chris Le Menestrel, VA Democracy Forward – Heidi Zollo & Joanna Collings, Herndon Reston Indivisible – Jacqui Lieberman, NOPE Neighbors We love spotlighting our candidates. On the show we spoke with with four candidates. Katie Sponsler (HD66) and Nadarius Clark (HD97) just won their primaries. Blakely Lockhart (HD56) is one of the youngest candidates running this cycle. And Finale Norton (HD 100) has us thinking that maybe this is the time we finally flip HD 100. We closed the show with a conversation with Melissa Hartman who will tell us about RASR (Resolutions Addressing Systemic & Structural Racism), an organization working to effect actionable change in the laws, policies, systems, and practices that established and cultivated systemic and structural racism. RASR’s goal is to identify those systems and structures to eliminate the disparate outcomes in health, education, financial stability, housing, and access to justice.

Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (HD45) and Bill Helsley (HD26) discussed what they see as the secret sauce for success. Matt Renninger (Partner, Apollo Group) shared his insights in matching candidates to districts and the critical role knowing and being from the community plays in successful campaigning. Alyia Gaskin (Candidate for Alexandria City Council) joined the conversation and shared how she built her large base of supporter. Sarah Bagley (Candidate for Alexandria City Council) spoke about how she used her activist roots for support to distinguish herself in a large and competitive race. Andria McClellan (Former candidate for Lt. Governor) talked about the unique challenges of reaching out to voters across an entire state.

Jamie Perrapato (Executive Director, Turn PA Blue) gave us an update on what’s going on in Pennsylvania. With the June 2021 Virginia primary only days away and the show occurring on National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the start of Wear Orange weekend to honor survivors of gun violence, this Friday Power Lunch focused how “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” will be on the ballot this election. Senator Jennifer McClellan (Candidate for Governor) spoke about voting, the power of the black vote, and the push to suppress the vote. Jonathan Jay (Gun Violence Researcher) talked about the root causes of why gun violence keeps increasing in the United States and what we can do about it. Tara Hassen Taylor (Virginia Chapter of Moms Demand Action) gave an update on what Moms Demand Action is doing this election to advocate for gun safety candidates. Virginia Diamond (President, Northern Virginia Labor Federation, AFL-CIO) spoke about the importance of unions and the fight to repeal Right to Work. Ben Moses (Candidate HD 59, veteran and critical care physician) spoke about his campaign Jennifer Carroll Foy (Candidate for Governor) discussed what is on the line this election for women’s rights, criminal justice reform, voting rights, and labor rights. AS GOES VIRGINIA, SO GOES THE NATION: Holding the Line for Democracy

This Friday Power Lunch discussed how the 2021 Virginia election is all about holding the line for democracy. Jamie Lockhart (Executive Director) and Han Jones (Political Director) of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia-spoke about the Supreme Court case that is threatening to overturn Roe v. Wade and strip people of their right to the reproductive healthcare they need. Kellen Squire (ER Nurse, former candidate, humorist and writer) helped unmask what’s going on with COVID in rural Virginia and how the Republican party is using lies as the basis for all their messaging. Sara Ratcliffe (HD 58) was our candidate spotlight. Qasim Rashid (Author, human rights activist, former candidate for CD1, attorney, and grassroots pundit) spoke about how Republicans are moving to shut down our democracy state by state and what we need to do in Virginia to hold the line this election. Robbin Warner (Co-Founder of Postcards4VA) discussed the power of postcards in boosting voter turnout and in creating communities of activists.

VOTER TURNOUT & COMPETITIVE POLITICS | 100 Districts Strong

This Friday Power Lunch was a celebration for having Democratic candidates running in all 100 state House districts. Hear the conversation on what it means that in 2021 Virginia Democrats are competitive everywhere! We started the show with Luisa Boyarski from the Virginia Grassroots Coalition who gave her grassroots update. Then Amanda Litman (Co-Founder of Run for Something, author and podcaster) shared her research on competitive state legislative races in 2020. They found that state races produced a reverse coattails effect, with the excitement generated by down ballot races trickling up to help the top of the ticket. Even when Democrats lost “having a contested state legislative race provided anywhere from a .3 percent to 1.5 percent boost for Biden.” This isn’t new to the Virginia grassroots; we know the key to winning is running everywhere. Jess Brown (Chair of Competitive Commonwealth Fund and Organizing Coordinator, SEIU VA 512) spoke about how and why the strategy of recruiting and funding Democratic candidates in Republican areas of Virginia to plant blue seeds.works in the short and long run. Debra Rodman (former Delegate and the Virginia State Chair of Vote Mama) told us about the important support Vote Mama provides to progressive moms running for office. When mothers run, things get done! Delegate Kelly Fowler discussed the key battleground areas of the Tidewater region of Virginia and what we can do to help these candidates. Community Advocate Yvonne Lewis spoke about the importance of bold organizations with bold histories and their continual fight for social justice. Jennifer Gaynor (VP of Communications, NWPC-VA) informed us about the actions of the newly formed Virginia Chapter of the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC). NWPC is a a multi-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process. NWPC was founded in 1971 by a who’s who of modern feminism: Gloria Steinem, Rep. Shirley Chisholm, Rep. Bella Abzug, Dorothy Height, Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, Fannie Lou Hammer and others.

DIGITALLY SPEAKING: The Perks & Perils of 2021

This Friday Power Lunch focused on all things digital, from the perils to the perks. Our first guest was Attorney General Mark Herring who gave us an update on cyber security, internet safety, and other key issues of the day. Then researchers CiCi Ling (Boston University) and Utkucan Balci (Binghamton University) explained their research on zoom bombing and what we can do about it. For a little fun and delight, we met Colleen Chulis and her daughter Adelle from Charlottesville who made a video that went viral of Adelle parodying her mother working from home. The show will then moved on to discussing the perks and perils of digital campaign ads. Christine Bachman (Founder of Our States Matter PAC and VP at SB Digital) spoke talk digital ads and gave us her read on what needs to happen so our candidates rule the digital landscape. She was joined by Candidate Debra Gardner (HD 27). We ended the show with a discussion with Juli Briskman (Loudoun Supervisor) will discuss on using digital as an elected official.

THE REAL MOTHER’S DAY GIFT: Delivering Economic Justice for Women

Mother’s Day is a holiday traditionally celebrated with cards and flowers. But are bouquets of flowers what moms really need while this pandemic disproportionately impacts women? More women than men have lost their jobs, especially Black and Latina women. One in three mothers ages 25 to 44 have reported leaving the workforce due to childcare issues. This Mother’s Day women need real action on economic justice not trinkets of thanks. This show took a hard look at what women have endured during the pandemic and what we can do about it. We opened the show with our favorite criminal and civil litigation attorney, podcaster and pundit Gene Rossi who gave us a national update on some of the legal probes of former Trump administration officials. Then Dr. Ivonne Wallace Fuentes (Professor of History at Roanoke College and founder of Indivisible Roanoke) told us about the Virginia Marshall Plan for Moms, a package of policies aimed at addressing the challenges faced by women and children. Senator Jennifer McClellan (candidate for Governor) spoke about what it will take to get these policies passed in Virginia. Criminal justice is often overlooked as a woman’s issues. Prison reform advocate and returning citizen Carla Anderson discussed the challenges women face re-entering society after incarceration. Mali Phonpadith (CEO, Soar Community Network ) spoke about how the pandemic has changed the workplace and workforce (30 million women have quit their jobs due to child care needs) and what the workplace might look like going forward.

Time for Truth

As the Biden administration’s first 100 days came to a close, we celebrated the bold actions of a popular, progressive agenda while dealing with Republicans perpetuating the Big Lie (that Trump won the election) and spewing the little lies of the moment. This week we discussed these big and little lies by calling them out, discussing their consequences, examining how people are speaking their truth, and identifying what we can do about it. We started the show with Amy Siskind (Activists, Feminist, Podcaster and Author of “The List: A Week-by-Week Reckoning of Trump’s First Year”) who has been calling out the Republican bastion of lies since the first days of the Trump administration. Phyllis Randall (Chair, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors) shared how distortions and untruths are not new in local government dialogue. Representative Don Beyer (CD 8) and Megan Beyer (journalist) spoke about how the Big Lie impacts the personal safety of Members of Congress and their families. Carmen Davis (a natural hair stylist in Richmond) spoke about how your hair style can be a form of speaking your truth, and the importance of the passage of the CROWN Act (a law amending the Virginia Human Rights Act to include a ban on discrimination “on the basis of traits historically associated with race, including hair texture, hair type, and protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists”) for the Black community. Then Lowell Feld (Founder and Editor of Blue Virginia) discussed the challenges the media faces in trying to present two sides of an issue when one side is fact and the other is a fabrication. We ended the show with Luisa Boyarski’s grassroots report.

Anti-Racism & Equity

This week’s show was on Anti-Racism and Equity: Building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture. We began this important conversation with Brandy S. Faulkner (Gloria D. Smith Professor of Black Studies, Virginia Tech) who helped us understand how each of us can become agents for change. Barika Porter (Professional Coach and member of Black Women United for Action) spoke about the important role community groups play making change in small and large ways through a personal “hands-on” approach. She also told us about her most recent project holding elected officials accountable on vaccine equity in Fairfax County. Paul Berry (Chair, Virginia Latino Advisory Board) shared how equity needs to be addressed in education from diversity in the classroom, to career and technical education offerings, to teacher compensation and education infrastructure. Monica Belton (Founder, RECET, Resilient Experiences for Children Exposed to Trauma) spoke about how we must include young voices in this conversation. And we ended with Delegate Mark Keam (Founding Member, Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus) addressing the escalation of assaults against Asian Americans and discuss the importance of joining forces against hate.

Bridging the Rural-Urban Divide

The rural-urban divide has grown in politics over the past couple of decades, with rural America becoming increasingly and reliably Republican. How did we get here? In this show we examined how this divide developed, what it means, and what we can do about it in Virginia. First, we heard from Anthony Flaccavento, former Congressional candidate in CD 9 and expert on rural-urban issues. Kal Munis, co-author of the report “GONE COUNTRY: Why Democrats Need to Play in Rural America, and How They Can Do It Again” outlined what is at stake if Democrats don’t reverse the rural free fall on the national level and figure out a way to reach out to rural Americans. We heard from current and former candidates about the challenges they face running in rural districts: Jennifer Kitchen (HD25), Annette Hyde (HD30), Mark Downey (HD 96), and former candidate Beverly Harrison. Eleanor Roy (Campaign Director, The Impact Center) spoke about the importance of building up a strong new generation of rural candidates across the Commonwealth through the investment of money, resources, and training. We ended the how with Mercedes Walters, one of three women running/cycling 415 miles over 10 days (April 24th – May 3rd) from West Virginia to Virginia paralleling the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) construction path. The purpose of this Protest Run is to put a spotlight on the consequences of building the MVP, document the community and environmental impact of the pipeline, and raise donations to benefit the impacted community.

Challenging the Status Quo: “Love it or List it”

This Friday Power Lunch was all about challenging the status quo in campaigns and campaigning. We started with a conversation with Tom Perriello (former diplomat, Congressperson, candidate for governor, and Executive Director of Open Society-US) who is no stranger to bucking the status quo. Then super Loudoun activist Charlotte McConnell (President, Equality Loudoun) spoke about running against the party pick for office. Next we discussed how things are changing in terms of candidates and campaigns with Angela Kasey (Executive Director, Virginia People’s PAC) and Emerge VA Executive Director Veena Gupta Lothe. From there we moved on to rethinking how elections are run with Elizabeth Melson, (President, Fair Vote Virginia) on rank choice voting. We ended the show with a spotlight on Bluebonnet Data with Becca Blais (Co-Founder and Executive Director) who helped us understand how we can use data to better understand our districts and voters. Bluebonnet Data recruits, trains, and organizes people with skills in coding and data science to volunteer on data analyst teams for progressive campaigns and causes.

WHY WORDS MATTER: Exploring the Power of Communication

This week’s show was all about why words matter. Our first guest was provocative and paradigm-challenging messaging expert, Anat Shenker-Osorio (Founder of ASO Communications and host of the podcast “Words to Win By”) who explained how our words affect audiences beyond even their conscious awareness. Using the wrong words, defeats our ability to win hearts and minds. Anat demonstrated how to tell our story in a way that mobilizes our base and persuades many more winnable people in the middle. Our candidate spotlight focused on Paul Siker (HD 33). Next we spoke to Ramunda Lark Young co-founder of Mahogany Books in Washington, DC, a bookstore focused on books for, by, and about people of the African Diaspora. We closed with visual artist and poet Dorothy Marie Rice.

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S FEMINISM, “How Gen Z is Reimagining Equality”

This show was all about Girl Power and how Gen Z is changing the framework of feminism by bringing intersectionality into every issue and every aspect of policy and campaigning. We began with a conversation with educator Jessica Berg who thought it was so important for young girls to know women’s history that she developed and instituted a women’s studies course into the Loudoun County High School Curriculum. She was joined by former student N’deye Sock who told us how this education influenced her view of herself and the world. Genisus Holland and Joi Coleman(members of Girls for a Change) explained how they are reimagining their place in the world through the opportunities and experiences that GFAC provided for them as young Black women. The conversation then shifted to the political. Belan Yeshigeta, Co-founder & Executive Director of Generation Ratify, an organization dedicated to ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment told how they are leading a feminist revolution that empowers and advocates for gender equality using an intersectional lens on the issues, in their work, and when approaching all policy proposals from climate justice, to queer liberation, equitable education, to combatting violence against minorities. Annika Khandelwal, At-Large Student Representative of the Fairfax County Commission for Women, spoke about how young women can make a difference in their local community on issues of gender equality. We ended by talking with candidate Blakely Lockhart (HD 56) the only Gen Z candidate running for delegate in 2021.

ALL EYES ON VIRGINIA 2021 – “Come Together Right Now”

All eyes are on Virginia. Organizations around the country are already offering their help as we head into our off-year election. In this show we spoke with four groups coming to help this election cycle and explored how we can work together and come together for the win. We opened the show with an important conversation on the rise of anti-AAPI violence and violence against women with Delegate Kathy Tran. Reid McCollum (Co-Founder, Postcards to Swing States) tolf us about their plan for mailing 1 million GOTV postcards to Virginia voters as well as an exciting new pilot project called “neighborhood letters”. Roxane Rucker (Regional Organizer,  Reclaim our Vote) explained how we can get involved in their partnership campaign with Postcards4VA currently underway to write postcards to voters of color in Virginia who have been purged from the voter rolls and need to re-register in time for the June primary. Nicole Hobbs (Co-Founder and Executive Director of Every District) discussed their strategy of assisting legislative races with better fundraising and data. JoAnn Loulan (Executive Director, Local Majority) spoke about their plan to provide candidates with position papers, graphics, and messaging to help amplify a winning message on all platforms. We closed the show with Kay Ferguson (ARTivism Virginia) who told us about their participation in the collaborative art project “Water Quilt Project” to honor and protect the waterways of Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina threatened by the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

This week we continued our celebration of Women’s History Month by focusing on the personal side of politics and the crucial role relationships play in everything we do. Glynda Carr (President & CEO of Higher Heights for America PAC) shared how relationships have been essential to recruit, prepare, and support Black women running for office.Tram Nguyen (Co-Executive Director of New Virginia Majority) discussed her work focusing on building the power of marginalized communities to change the political systems that aren’t working. Lala Wu (Co-Founder & Executive Director of Sister District Project) spoke about Sister District Project’s plans for helping grassroots groups and candidates in Virginia in 2021. And Vanessa Maddox (founder of Black Wall Street Loudoun and former Leesburg Town Council member) and Barb Jones talked about organizing.

THE STATE OF WOMEN’S EQUALITY | Racial, Economic, Reproductive & Policy Realities

After the 19th Amendment passed giving women the right to vote, Crystal Eastman–lawyer, feminist, and civil libertarian–saw this as only the beginning. The following year she published an essay aptly titled “Now We Can Begin”charting a course of what needed to happen for women to truly be free. Crystal went on to co-author the ERA with Alice Paul. We began our celebration of Women’s History Month by extending Crystal Eastman’s assertion “Now We can Begin” with a look at The State of Women’s Equality: Racial, Economic, Reproductive & Policy Realities. Community activist Anna Bradley discussed how equality and racial justice are inextricably linked. Sarah Jane Glynn (Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress) talked about how women’s economic empowerment is central to realizing women’s rights and gender equality. Kate Kelly (fiery activist, human rights lawyer, LGBTQ advocate, and excommunicated Mormon) addressed the inseparable bond between reproductive justice and equality. Lisa Sales (Chair, Fairfax County Commission for Women and ERA Coalition Advisory Board member) discussed the new White House Gender Policy Council and how we must enact policy from the state to the federal level. Ellie Smeal (President and Co-Founder of the Feminist Majority) gave a big picture perspective on women’s rights nationally and internationally.

Our focused on Talking the Talk to Win as we dove into the importance of messaging: what we need to say, how we need to say it, and how we can get our message heard. Public Speaking Professor and Radio/TV Host Kevin Boston-Hill  give a snapshot of the basics of speech delivery and framing. Election forecaster and take no prisoners pundit, Rachel “the Doc” Bitecofer talked about her new initiative Strike PAC and how it hopes to flip the script on the GOP in 2021 by exposing their lies and failures in big, bold colors. And we ended the show with Nick Knudsen, founder and Executive Director of Demcast USA (Grassroots media by the people, for the people) sharing how Demcast USA strategically amplifies grassroots messaging through social media.

MAKING GOOD TROUBLE Every Way Possible

This week’s show celebrated the birthday of civil rights hero Congressman John Lewis. On the 55th anniversary of the historic march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, John Lewis challenged every American to “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and redeem the soul of America.” The guests on this show shared their stories of taking a stand and getting into good trouble in Virginia. Delegate Ibraheem Samirah shared how he was raised to make good trouble. He told the story of how he confronted President Trump when he spoke in Virginia in July 2019.  Political activist, strategist and candidate Matt Rogers spoke about the energy building to have Democratic candidates running in all 100 districts in 2021.  Poet Zahria Ford read her award winning poem “Colors” and discussed youth activism.  Power Lunch co-host Krysta Jones led a conversation with Sandy Treadway, Librarian of Virginia, and educator Zakiyyah Ali on African American history makers. Singer-songwriter Crys Matthews closed the show with a live performance.

This week the Friday Power Lunch (2/12/2021) tackled the tough issue of Gun Violence Prevention. We talked about legislation making its way through the General Assembly with Delegates Dan Helmer and Kathleen Murphy, as well as steps that need to be taken from the local level to the federal level with Chelsea Parsons, VP of Gun Violence Prevention at Center for American Progress. We ended this segment with a powerful personal account of the horrors of gun violence by Brenda Moss. We then moved to our Advocacy Spotlight with Holly Seibold (founder and Executive Director of BRAWS) and ended with our nod to Valentine’s Day and our continued celebration of Black History Month by visiting Soul Cakes by Tanya.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE | Moving from Outrange to Action

It was all about Environmental Justice at this week’s Friday Power Lunch (2/5/2021). The conversation went from what’s happening on the federal level to a run down of current legislation being debated and passed in Richmond to what we need to know and what we can do as activists. Our lawmaker guests included Rep. Abigail Spanberger (CD7) and Delegates Jay Jones (HD89) and Jeffrey Bourne (HD 71). Our own Krysta Jones of Vote Lead Impact gave a short presentation celebrating the black family. Dana Wiggins of the Virginia Poverty Law Center and Kendyl Crawford of the Virginia Interfaith Power and Light helped us better understand what environmental justice really means and presented steps needed to be taken at every level. And we ended with a candidate update from Laurie Buchwald, running for Senate (SD38) in the March 23 Special Election.

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL | Gender & Racial Equity

On this one year anniversary of Virginia being the 38th state to ratify the ERA, Longtime women’s rights activist Eileen Davis gave us an insider’s view of what’s going on politically in the House and Senate to remove the deadline. VA Deputy Solicitor General Michelle Kallen then provided an update on the different legal challenges. Then former Delegate and VA Governor Candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy and Executive Director of the VA Legislative Black Caucus Adele McClure both discussed how in the push for equality we must address systemic racism in every facet of the work that we do. And that we must include racial equity in all efforts around gender equality. Our Lawmaker Spotlight was Delegate Sally Hudson who explained how her top priority is the economic recovery of COVID focusing on evictions, unemployment, and access to healthcare. She also discussed her work on justice reform and our climate crisis.

The Law & Moving Forward | Keep Pushing Up that Hill for Change

Our featured segments included a dive into the war room of impeachment and pardons with attorney Gene Rossi. Then we shined the light on the history making of our new Vice President Kamala Harris. We started with a conversation with two young change makers Pooja Tantore and Grace Crangle. Then we heard from Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sisters of VP Kamala Harris Brenda Jackson Sewell and Briana Sewell (candidate for HD51) from Prince William County who shared their intergenerational perspective on having a sorority sister in the White House. Our legislative spotlight featured David Reid (HD32) discussing the legalization of cannabis and its impact on the economy and jobs for Virgina. We closed by watching the nation’s first youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman deliver her poem The Hill We Climb at the inauguration.  The complete poem in text form is available here.

No Justice-No Peace & What you do Matters

This week’s show was all about justice. We opened the show with Matt Royer (VA Justice Dems) giving us a Virginia legislative update. Then Taylor Edwards (Declaration for American Democracy) talked about HR 1 before Congress and what we can do to help ensure that it passes. Delegate Shelly Simonds (HD94) discussed environmental justice. Pastor Michelle Thomas (Loudoun NAACP President) brought it all home with impactful words about how justice is important for all of us, not just you all. Jen Runkle (Postcards4VA Alexandria founder and organizational psychologist) facilitated a breakout group session. Kristina Hagen of the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy gave a brief update. And we closed with Craftivist Diane Dresdner talking about her work making masks for first responders and our community.

Frontline for Democracy

In the aftermath of January 6, 2021, this was a somber and soulful Power Lunch. We began with a riveting account of the events inside the capital from Congressman Gerry Connolly. Then we had a discussion on legislation for the upcoming 2021 state legislative session on workers rights with Delegates Kathy Tran and Paul Krizek, David Broder (President, SEIU-VA512) and Virginia Diamond (President, AFL-CIO – NOVA). Dr. Julia O’Hara Biggins gave an update on COVID-19 and the vaccine roll out in Virginia. We closed by watching a video of Maya Angelou and others reciting her poem Still I Rise. 

Bodacious Badass Brunch

To welcome 2021 we decided to kick it off with a Power Brunch, a little something we called our Bodacious Badass Power Brunch. We opened up by hearing from our Special Election (Jan. 5, 2021) candidates Candi King (HD2) and Angelia Williams Graves (HD90) who gave us updates on their campaigns and told us how we can help them these last days before the election. Then we moved to a discussion on Community, what we all do so well in the grassroots. We were joined by some amazing organizers who know how to build community. Mali Phonpadith from Soar, Kat Janich & Amy Dagliano from Rowan Tree Shared Workspace and Shannon Downey of Badass Cross Stitch fame.
